In the 'Hood - Coventry Street, South Melbourne

It’s Christmas shopping time so I want to share a bit of local intel on the Jane Ramsay ‘hood - Coventry Street, South Melbourne!
In my mind it is about as cool as it gets (quite apart from the fact that the Jane Ramsay store is there;-) because it is the perfect mix of great independent stores and fabulous places to eat or drink coffee. It is one of the rare shopping strips that have no boring chain stores (with the exception of Bed Bath and Table that is). It is easy to walk because it is one block between Clarendon Street and Cecil Street, and it is also full of cool people who are as diverse and interesting, as the melting pot reflected in the local businesses and industry. Even before locating my store and office here, Coventry Street has long been my local as I have been coming to the South Melbourne market since my University days. Every weekend I can still be found at the “Market”; eating out, drinking coffee, catching up with friends… It makes doing the weekly shop less tedious than it otherwise would be!

I could go on, but since Christmas shopping is on everyone’s mind, here is a list of some Coventry Street faves for you to visit and check-out as you work through your gift list.

Coventry Street is a great place to visit if you are after Homeware and Gifts. The street has been anchored at either end by two homeware/gift stores for years; Nest (at the market end) and Pomegranate (our next door neighbor on the Clarendon St end).

Nest, owned by debonair Kevin, is an elegantly curated assortment of homewares, cushions, beautiful throws and bedding, baby clothing, jewelry, and they also stock my personal favorite - body products by Aesop.

Pomegranate next to us is a well-known destination for locals seeking an eclectic assortment of homewares for both indoor and outdoor as well as the odd clothing and accessory item. Definitely a place you can find a gift for every one on your list!
251A Coventry Street

Anthony who owns Pomegranate also owns 2 of the other gorgeous stores in the street. Mr. Darcy and Little Darcy.
Mr. Darcy is down the other end of the street on the opposite side to us and has a super cute and stylish assortment of gifts, homewares, clothing and accessories.

Little Darcy is the cool kid’s equivalent. Having all the same categories (as its’ parent Mr Darcy) for babies and children up to 8 years of age. It has a fabulous assortment of goodies for stylish, young urban parents and their super cool kids. My daughter who just turned 9 LOVES this store!

On Stone
If you are a lover of personal creations, photography, sustainable re-use of materials, or just art and creativity – then this is a store you need to visit. On Stone recreate your images on any number of re-cycled materials. A unique and personal gift idea to last a life time.
285-287 Coventry Street

Vincent 2 is a relative new comer to the street but seems to already be a fixture. Filled with homewares and furnishings with a modern, Scandinavian designer bent. The space they have created is super cool, and interesting.

Begger Man Thief is not quite on Coventry Street, (it is just around the corner on Clarendon Street), but is definitely an extension of the Coventry Street style. If you are looking for a stylish, sartorial gift for the special man or men in your life, then you really need to know about this store. Scott who owns Begger Man Thief has a sensational eye, and his curated selection of quality shoes, accessories, and gift items make them masculine must-haves.
244 Clarendon Street

The Coventry Book Store and Paperpoint satisfy the needs of those of us who have an obsession with beautiful tactile papers and books.

The Coventry Book Store is one of my 2 favorite bookstores in Melbourne. Everyone appreciates a beautiful hard cover book for Christmas. Steve who owns the store is a great guy and who is knowledgeable about his products and has created an environment where bibliophiles can browse, linger, and soak up the atmosphere after a nearby meal or coffee.
265 Coventry Street

Paperpoint stocks an extensive collection of beautiful paper, paper based products, and individual stationery items. It is perfect when you are looking for a special paper to create a personal touch to invitations, or thank-you notes for all those Christmas gifts you are about to receive. I also love finding unique wrapping solutions here to create my annual personal wrapping signature. I do love a theme to my gifting☺ So if you’re like me this is the place for you!

It wouldn’t be Melbournian if I didn’t mention where to find good coffee, so when you’re done shopping (or needing to get the energy to start) and you are looking for coffee and/or something delicious for breakfast or lunch, it is almost too difficult to choose. Gas, Freestyle (around the corner in Union Street), Giddi-up, Cottles Coffee (who actually roast their own coffee and sell their own blends – you can watch all the activity from the store), Café Sweethearts, Tuckshop, Chez Dre, all offer a great coffee and yummy food. I have to confess that the first 3 get most of my business but really you can’t go wrong in this ‘hood!

If you are looking for something stronger ;) than a coffee after all your Christmas shopping Coventry Street is also conveniently anchored at both ends of the strip by 2 great examples of modern Australian Pubs; The George – At the Cecil Street end, and The Golden Gate – At the Clarendon Street end. Or head to the Market and visit one of the sensational and vibrant restaurants along Cecil street for a vino, beer, or cocktail.

There’s something for everyone in Coventry Street, so look forward to seeing you soon in the Hood! Merry Christmas!
