Abbey's Uni Break in Europe
Posted on August 21 2014
Some of you will recognise beautiful Abbey as a regular casual at both Jane Ramsay stores. As well as working for us, she is currently in her first year studying Arts at Melbourne University, and recently returned from 5 weeks traveling Europe with a friend. We asked her to share her high-lights with us.
1) Where did you travel to?
It was a big loop around Europe, so I started in Paris followed by Venice, Florence, Rome, Crete, Ios, Santorini, Brussels and Amsterdam. I was travelling in my university break so I wanted to squeeze in absolutely as much as possible.
2) Where did you stay - any standout hotels or neighbourhoods?
We were lucky enough to stay in a beautiful apartment only a block away from the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysées in Paris and that was incredible. There was a food market just at our doorstep, and the neighbourhood had a great feel. Another favourite was Hotel Medici in Florence, the accommodation wasn't anything special but it had the most spectacular rooftop terrace with a view of the Duomo.
3) Favourite places to eat, favourite meal?
It's so hard to choose having been in both Italy and France but I would have to say Cesar's in Paris on Avenue Wagram; great atmosphere and unforgettable food. Also couldn't get enough of the pistachio gelato all through Italy, nothing in Melbourne compares.
4) Inspirational or Memorable Moments?
The most memorable moment of the trip was probably our last night in Santorini. I had been sick so unfortunately I hadn't been able to explore the island as much as I had wanted, but I made it out to Thira on the last night and we went for a swim and had dinner while watching the breathtaking sunset - I can see why people fall in love with the Greek Islands.
5) Any other highlights?
Venice was another highlight for sure, I can't imagine a better place to get lost. The winding streets, friendly people and beautiful crumbling churches made me miss it before I even left!
6) What did you pack?
I absolutely lived in my Jane Ramsay Daisy Denim Shirt; it was so easy to throw on during travel days or layer over lighter clothing in the evenings. The Audrey Lux T was also a favorite, such a nice pop of color during summer and a great piece to wear on hot days as it breathes really well.
7) Do you have a strategy for packing?
I always make myself pack in outfits so I don't end up bringing items I can't wear. I also roll all of my clothes, I find it easier to see everything I packed and it means you can skip ironing most of the time.
8) Any tips on travelling?
While the sights are always great and you can hardly go to Paris and not see the Eiffel Tower or skip the Colloseum in Rome, I find I always make my favorite memories when I just pick a cool area in a city and get lost in it. You're bound to find a great little restaurant, meet some locals and see a different side to the city.
9) Any websites or resources you use for planning your holiday?
I am a big Lonely Planet advocate! Carrying around a big guidebook can be annoying but I find them so useful for places I've never been before. I used the Mediterranean Europe version for my trip, and it was worth the extra weight!
10) Where to next?
I would love to visit Spain & Portugal if I was heading back to Europe but I would really love to go on a big trip to South America or Africa... time will tell!
