Jane Ramsay talks style influences and inspirations as the new season approaches...
I once read an old-fashioned birthday book that stated that for those born on my birthday flowers were like oxygen. I couldn’t believe how true it was or what an odd characteristic to consider a definition of someone! However odd as it is, my house or office feels incomplete without flowers. Going to my favorite florist each week to make my selection always inspires me. To me flowers are filled with promise and beauty, and although I truly love all and any fresh flowers I only ever buy White. Every now and then I buy pink or orange, but there is something so incredibly fresh and beautiful to me about a white flower contrasted against green foliage that any time I deviate I wish I hadn’t!
I love walking through galleries for inspiration. I am mostly drawn to modern, post-modern or contemporary art. For me it is about the color and shape and how the artist interprets them in his or her medium. If I want realism it is photography that inspires me. In fact it is my nine year old daughters’ photography that is my greatest inspiration at the moment. It is fascinating to see the world through her eyes. The minutiae that she considers worthy of zooming in on is sometimes like seeing something for the first time.
Who isn’t inspired by travel? I’m even inspired by travel pictures - I can spend hours looking at travel images on Pinterest! But there is nothing like being some place else. You don’t take things for granted. You notice things differently. Things you may not look twice at in your own environment. I especially find Asia inspiring. There is always so much color, and movement. It ignites all senses: taste, smell, sight, sound, even touch.
I think for any creative person the creativity exists in that tension of always trying to get it right. It is in this way that when I see someone wear something in a way I hadn’t yet thought of or just pulling together an outfit I admire, I find inspiration in that. It might lead me to consider my own pieces differently or it might inspire me to create something similar. I’m always looking at girls in the street, blogs, or Pinterest to check-out how people are wearing things.
TV and Film
Watching a movie or TV show we usually adopt the personal perspective of the character with which we most identify. It’s like getting to inhabit a different form of myself, and it often leads me to different design ideas. Almost like creating costumes appropriate to that character. A lasting fashion memory is watching Grace Kelly in “To Catch A Thief” with my grandmother when I was about 9 and thinking she was the most fashionable and glamorous woman ever!
This is a big one. Music often leads me on a creative meditation. Also music film clips or live concerts are inspiring. Seeing how the artist or their stylist has put together a look that their channeling is inspiring, and has a definite influence on popular culture and how women are dressing.
Life is the biggest inspiration of all. The places I go. The things I read. The people I see. What do I need in my wardrobe right now to help me look cool while my life is unfolding. These are the key drivers to my creativity when it comes to clothing. My style has evolved and changed to meet the variety of situations I have found myself in.
